Tender for authorized Article 6.4 Emission Reductions: Germany's Initiative to Offset Government Business Travel

Date 07/10/2026

The German Federal Government generally follows the principle of “avoid first, then reduce and finally offset” greenhouse gas emissions. To address its remaining emissions, the Federal Government voluntarily offsets them by acquiring authorized Article 6.4 Emission Reductions (A6.4ERs) from ambitious, high-quality climate protection projects.

Since 2014, the German Federal Government has been offsetting the climate impact of its employees’ business travel. As of 2021, only authorized A6.4ERs are eligible for purchase.

This voluntary offsetting covers all emissions from business trips (including non-CO2-effects) undertaken by staff of the supreme and higher federal authorities, as well as other directly subordinate agencies. To determine the total volume of emissions to be offset, all business trips by company vehicle and aircraft carried out in 2025 are included.

The German Environment Agency has published a tender to purchase up to 1.101.231 A6.4ERs with Corresponding Adjustment from registered, high-quality projects to offset the government’s business travel and other unavoidable emissions.

The deadline for submission of tenders is 03/11/2026.
